Why people choose this layout
The fridge — the part you open most — is at eye level. The freezer is at the bottom because you open it less often. It's an ergonomic win, and it's why this layout is on most premium freestanding refrigerators. In Santa Monica condos, you see Bosch, Liebherr, Fisher & Paykel, and KitchenAid bottom-freezer units a lot.
What we fix
- Freezer drawer not closing flush — slide rails, drawer alignment, or worn gasket
- Ice forming under the freezer basket — defrost drain clog, same as on French door units
- Fridge warming up while freezer is cold — damper, fridge thermistor, or evaporator fan
- Ice maker problems — usually the in-freezer ice maker, fill tube, or inlet valve
- Compressor running constantly — door seal, defrost issue, or condenser airflow
- Bottom freezer not cold enough — door seal, drawer rails letting cold air escape
The drain line — same story as French door
If you find ice under the freezer basket, the defrost drain is clogged. Water that should run to the drain pan is freezing instead. We clear the line, melt the existing ice, and on some models install a small drain heater clip that prevents it from happening again.
For more on this leak pattern see refrigerator leaking water.
Drawer rails matter more than people think
The freezer drawer rolls on a pair of slides. Over time these get debris in them, the drawer drops slightly, and the gasket no longer seals to the cabinet face. Cold air leaks out, the compressor runs more, and frost forms on food packaging. Fixing the slides usually solves it.
Built-in bottom-freezers
Sub-Zero, Thermador Freedom Collection, and Miele MasterCool make built-in bottom-freezer columns that pair with separate fridge or freezer columns. We service those as well — see our built-in refrigerator repair page for the specific details.
Quick check: Pull the freezer drawer all the way out. If you see a smooth sheet of ice on the bottom, you've got a drain clog. Mention this when you call so we bring the right tools.
